This is an exciting opportunity to lead an organization that is both high-functioning and hungry for what’s next—guiding a passionate volunteer board, championing exceptional professional development, and serving as a connector across statewide districts, partners, and at the Capitol.

The Executive Director provides strategic, operational, and relational leadership as the association’s chief executive, working in close partnership with the Board of Directors to advance the mission, vision, and strategic priorities while ensuring strong member services, sound financial stewardship, and effective operations. As a small statewide association, this role requires a balance of visionary leadership and hands-on execution.

Key Responsibilities
Role & Scope
Strategic Leadership & Governance
  • Lead development, implementation, and monitoring of MASBO’s strategic plan with the Board
  • Serve as chief executive advisor, providing timely information, analysis, and recommendations
  • Collaborate on meeting agendas, prepare materials, ensure follow-through on board actions
  • Ensure compliance with bylaws, policies, and applicable laws and regulations
Organizational Leadership & Operations
  • Oversee day-to-day operations ensuring efficient, ethical, and transparent practices
  • Supervise and support staff, fostering a collaborative, high-performing environment
  • Establish administrative systems, procedures, and internal controls
  • Protect the legal, financial, and historical integrity of the association
Financial Management & Stewardship
  • Prepare and administer the annual budget with the Board and Finance Committee
  • Monitor revenues and expenditures for financial sustainability and alignment
  • Oversee financial reporting, audits, tax filings, and fiscal responsibilities
  • Execute contracts and purchasing within board-approved authority
Member Engagement & Services
  • Maintain a visible, accessible, and responsive presence with members statewide
  • Ensure high-quality professional development, conferences, and resources
  • Support committees and volunteer leaders in advancing MASBO initiatives
  • Promote inclusive engagement reflecting diversity of districts, roles, and regions
Professional Development & Programs
  • Oversee conferences, workshops, Leadership Academy, certifications, and webinars
  • Explore enhancements and develop new services for school business officials
  • Coordinate credentialing, certification, or authorization-related activities
Advocacy, Partnerships & External Relations
  • Build relationships with partners, state agencies, affiliates, vendors, and sponsors
  • Serve as MASBO’s liaison to ASBO International and national education associations
  • Partner with contracted lobbyist to support advocacy and communicate legislative implications
  • Represent MASBO professionally at meetings, conferences, and public events
Communications & Public Relations
  • Oversee website, newsletters, announcements, and member outreach
  • Ensure clear, timely communication with members, Board, and stakeholders
  • Promote MASBO’s mission, value, and impact through strategic messaging

Experience & Background
  • Association leadership experience is highly valued, particularly in member-driven organizations
  • School finance or education experience is helpful but not required—can be learned with the strength of the membership base
Compensation
Salary & Benefits
Target Salary Range
$145,000 – $165,000
Commensurate with experience and qualifications. The Executive Director will also have access to an employee benefits program.
Location & Working Conditions
Remote / Hybrid in Minnesota
MASBO staff currently operate in a remote/hybrid work setting. The Executive Director may be based anywhere in Minnesota, with work typically performed from a professional office in St. Louis Park, MN or a home office environment.
